Description:
The browser has become a viable platform for game developers. HTML 5 coupled with OpenGL, either through WebGL or Native Client, provides a powerful environment in which to develop. By building tools and engines that utilize web technology we can finally achieve true cross platform development. This session will show how to design tools utilizing the functionality available in the browser and on the server. Examples of tools, such as a 3D model viewer, functioning completely in the browser will be demonstrated and discussed These cases provide insight on how to take advantage of the capabilities of the browser. The programming language Dart will be presented as an alternative to JavaScript, highlighting how it can be extended and embedded to facilitate development of next-gen technology for game development.
Intended audience and prerequisites:
This session is intended for programmers, of all levels of experience, interested in game engine and tools development utilizing the browser.
Session takeaway:
Attendees will understand how web technologies can be leveraged to ease development of internal technology and tools for game creators. They will learn how embedding a web programming language can allow targeting of not only the web, but mobile and console as well.

Biography:
Don Olmstead is a Software Engineer at Sony Network Entertainment, working on porting WebKit to Playstation hardware. Prior to joining SNEI, he worked in immersive media, creating interactive applications using camera based tracking, and game development, authoring a game engine for embedded hardware that has shipped multiple titles. He is an author at #AltDevBlogADay where he contributes his knowledge on game development. His writing has also appeared on Gamasutra, and GameDev.net, as well as the upcoming book Game Tools Gems.
